While unequivocally rejecting the Trump administration’s Peace to Prosperity (Deal of the Century) plan, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called it an “Israeli-American preemptive plan to put an end to the question of Palestine.”

Speaking before the United Nations Security Council, he made his case for a UN resolution opposing the US peace plan. However, a vote was delayed when it became obvious the resolution would fall short of the required number of votes to pass.

Abbas suggested that the Palestinians and Israelis be allowed to reach their own peace agreement, rather than have one imposed. Interestingly, it is Abbas who refuses to sit down and negotiate a peace deal!

On a very odd note, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert sat side-by-side with Abbas at a news conference in NYC yesterday and proclaimed Abbas to be a man of peace and the best peace negotiator in a deal with Israel.

As the only Prime Minister to meet Palestinian demands of a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders, Olmert negotiated a deal in 2008 which was thwarted when corruption charges took down the Israeli PM.

While we see lots of reference to peace, and many who propose various means of peace, we must remember that peace is a fleeting thing until the Prince of Peace returns to set up His Millennial Kingdom. Not Olmert, not Abbas, not Netanyahu or President Trump will succeed in bringing peace to the Middle East. Only Jesus Christ our Lord will do that.

Nonetheless, we are told to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122) and, for Jerusalem’s sake, not to be silent (Isaiah 62) until Jerusalem becomes a praise in the earth. Let’s be faithful to do our part, and leave true peace to the One and Only Prince of Peace!
