Starting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, the entire Russian government resigned on Wednesday following President Vladimir Putin’s state of the nation address. To put it in perspective, suppose the entire Presidential cabinet and all members of US Congress resigned in the span of a day or two.
President Putin is proposing a total overhaul of the Russian constitution, and many believe his intent is to shift power to a single position, which he will hold.
You can read details of the mass resignation here, but a glance at Ezekiel 38 leads to legitimate questions: Is Putin setting himself up to become the all-powerful czar of Russia? Could he be Gog of Magog, referenced in verse 2 of that prophetic chapter 38?
I have always maintained that it is too early to identify Gog of Magog, and I still hold that position. However, never in the history of the world have we seen a specific man in a specific nation who accurately matched the description given in that verse. Take a look:
“Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him.”~Ezekiel 38:2
Careful study of Ezekiel 38 reveals Gog as a title, not a place, and Magog, Rosh, Meshech and Tubal as areas in or very close to the modern-day nation of Russia. Gog will be a czar, an all-powerful, “answer to no one” leader. He will almost certainly be shrewd and harsh. (Sound like Putin?)
Go on to study Ezekiel 38 and you will learn that Russia will lead a coalition with Persia (today’s Iran), Ethiopia (likely including Sudan of today), Put (Libya, and perhaps Algeria), Gomer (parts of Turkey and expanding to the west) and Beth-togarmah (parts of Turkey, perhaps expanding to the east).
It is those specific nations who are working somewhat independently today, but definitely in opposition and hatred toward Israel. Currently they have differing motives, yet something will cause them to join together in a massive invasion of Israel. We get a hint of that “something” in verse 12 where it talks about the invaders coming to capture spoil and seize plunder.
Only recently has Israel really had any spoil to capture or plunder to seize! What is that resource? Natural gas, now flowing from the super-sized gas field off the Mediterranean Coast, and perhaps oil in the Golan Heights and elsewhere.
